YUZIMA
YUZIMA has been labeled a “rising indie
luminary” in an exploding scene of New York City singer-songwriters — artists
who dabble in various elements from folk to industrial and synthesizer based
genres. YUZIMA has done this, but with his own version of industrial and noise
influenced post-punk with strong melodies, wide-ranging choruses rounded out by
experimentalism. Under the Radar described him as "Achtung Baby-esque rock and soulful vocals." This unique ear
catching mix of sounds is evidenced on his latest release BASH
{Insta-Album}, where Yuzima channels inspiration from his unlikely childhood in
Gun Hill Projects in the Bronx, a new recording format, current social issues
and even mysticism — for a big ambitious sound. Yuzima has been praised and
featured on major online media like Afropunk, Louder than War, The Modern Folk
Music of America and Music Historian, where recent singles like “BASH” have
caused a firestorm of quotes like "distorted, off-kilter
infectiousness" and "spurring and of the moment."
Yuzima got his
start in the Gun Hill Projects in the Bronx, where his single mother raised him
on r&b and old school jazz while he took in big rock names on MTV. Even at
a young age, YUZIMA soaked up the power of rock and roll from bands like U2 and
Nirvana, even while also taking in Wu-tang Clan and Jay – Z and old school rap
greats like Boogie Down Productions. Eventually, Yuzima and his mother picked up
and moved to New England where YUZIMA played with local indie bands. Once
graduated, YUZIMA worked as a cook for the local University to save up the
money to move back to New York City.
Once back, YUZIMA
played with several local post punk bands, eventually going solo. He blazed a trail,
performing at many of NYC’s most notable venues from Kenny’s Castaways and
Pianos to Brooklyn Bowl. YUZIMA has also
released multiple EP’s including The
Cosmonaut, It’s Wonderful and
2012’s Sound Opera – Project One
which earned him an early taste of critical acclaim. “Rising indie luminary”,
“great artist” were just some of what multiple blogs said about Yuzima’s music.
Currently, YUZIMA is continuing his prolific run with his latest release BASH {Insta-Album} and last year’s “THE
MACHINE”, while both have been featured on dozens of blogs from Gayletter to
Afropunk. BASH {Insta-Album} is available on bandcamp while “THE MACHINE” is on
Itunes. Yuzima is currently playing shows to promote the records.
